Dr. Edwino Fernando is recognized for his outstanding research on the taxonomy of the plant family Palmae. As a taxonomist, he has made an important revision of the genus Nenga in Southeast Asia and the Malesian Region and of the genus Heterospathe in the Philippines. He has contributed significantly to our knowledge of the palms of the Philippines including the first comprehensive survey in 70 years and the discovery of at least eight species and one variety which are all new to science.
